The Gods

Zeus

He was the supreme god. To the Greeks he was the god of the weather. He was born in Crete and he was brought to a cave and fed by a goat. When Cornus was overthrown Zeus and his brothers divided the universe and he obtained the heavens. It was said that if he threw thunderbolts he signifies his power over other gods and men. He is the one who grants victory in war and the protector of political freedom and therefore many festivals were given in his honour.

Ares

God of war and protector of growth to the Romans he was known as Mars.

Aprhodite

The goddess of love, beauty and fertility. The Romans identified her as Venus. She was also seen as the protector of sailors and the goddess of war.

Bacchus

He was indentifyed with the greek god Dynoisus. People saw hims as the God of wine. He was a popular mystery cult and many festivals were held in his honour. This was because many people believed that the more wine you drank the more power you would get.

Cupid

He was the boy-god of love with wings and a quiverful of arrows. He also appears on coffins as a symbol of life after death.

Hades

In greek myth he was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. He was the ruler of the underworld but not an enemy to mankind. People believed that his kingdom was undergrougnd. His realm contained a dreary plain called Asphoale where ghosts led an unstubtsabtial life. If people managed to mis this then the fortunate ones would go to the Elysium and those who were enemies of the gods were taken to Tartarus as a punishment. The relms are also seperated by one of the rivers called Styx.

Hestia

The virgin goddess. She was the goddess of the hearth and symbol of the home and family. To the Romans she was known as Vesta and she was more important to them than to the Greeks

Hercules

He was the Roman adaptation of the Greek god Heracles. He was worshiped as the god of victory and commercial enterprise. To the Greeks Heracles was the son of zeus and the most famous of Greek heros. He was famous for his strength, courage, endurance, good nature and compassion. He was considered the universal helper.

Fates

These were the greek fates who were represented from the time of Homer and onwards. They were the childern of Nyx (Night). There names were Klotho (who wove the thread) Lachesis (who drew off the thread) and Atrpos ( who cut the thread).The spinning is thought of as the cycle of life. They are present of all great beginnings.

Hera

In Greek myth she was the sister and wife of Zeus and this delivered her authority as Queen of the Gods. She known as the Goddess of marriage and of married women. But herself was never represented as a mother with a cild. In myth she is shown as a jealous wife and has a hatred for his children.

Poseidon

In Greek myth originally he was the God of earthquakes but later became the God of sea. His wife was Amphitrite and they had a son called Triton. As the God of sea his cult was widely followed as it attested by the city names POTIDAEA and Poseidonia. He is usally represented with a trident and he is closely connected to horses.

Titans

In greek myth they were the older gods of the generation before the Olympian gods. According to Hesoid there were 12 Titans, 6 sons and 6 daughters. Some of their children were also Titans such as Prometheus and Atlas. Later there was a battle between the gods and the Titans which lasted for 10 years and they were imprisioned in Tarturus.

Artemis

Daughter of Zeus and twin sister of Appollo. She was the goddess of wildlife. She brings fertility to mankind and beasts; she is the goddess who helps women in child birth. She is also a kown as a moon and virgin goddess.
